Excerpt from “Five Minutes A Day to Staff Literacy and On Pitch Singing- A sequence for musical training with the floor staff  presented by Phil Boehr at Galveston 2007 ACSI Convention, used with permission

Classroom set up:

Long skinny room: Put down five lines of tape one foot apart and close the ends (bar lines). Put a foot of tape down and skip a foot for the “C1” ledger lines beneath the treble clef.

Echo me and do what my feet do:

C,C,C,C,C--- Sing a middle C and step on the C line alternating your feet

D,D,D,D,D--- Hold the last note for 3 counts and breath on beat 4, then move on

E,E,E,E,E--- Step on first line E

F,F,F,F,F---  Step on first space F

G,G,G,G,G--- Step on second line G

After the students catch on to this exercise fairly well, then we go down.

G,G,G,G,G--- F,F,F,F,F--- E,E,E,E,E--- D,D,D,D,D--- C,C,C,C,C---

Now do the same patterns with only two of each note: C,C,D,D,E,E,F,F,G,G,

Turn around, then go down: G,G,F,F,E,E,D,D,C,C

Now lets go faster: At about m= 100 do 8th notes on C,D,E,F,G,G,G---

Do that a few times; then try going down, slowly at first on quarter notes then moving to eighth notes G,F,E,D,C,C,C---

SKIPS!

Next we work the notes C-G with skips. To do this all the students face you on one end of the staff with one foot on middle C and one foot on D.

Sing and step the note names:

C,D, C,D, C,E, C,E, C,F, C,F,  C,G, C,G

(move towards singing each interval one time each)

TOP OF THE SCALE

Use upper vocal adjustment with this pattern:

Start with the eighth not pattern: C,D,E,F,G,G,G--- then add A, and B,  as quarter notes and three high C’s (two 8ths and a quarter) A-B- CCC-

THE WHOLE SCALE UP AND DOWN

C,D,E,F,G,G,G- A-B-C,C,C---

Now let’s go down:

C-B-A-G- G,F,E,D,C,C,C-

Now the big skips.  (Both feet on low C)

Stand sideways while you sing and step: C,D,C,E,C,F,C,G,C,A,C,B,C, high C

Now the descending scale:

Feet on high C and B to start

C,B,C,A,C,G,C,F,C,E,C,D,C, low C

Now the next skill: ascending skips.

Use line, line, space, space pattern

C,E,D,F,E,G,F,A,G,B,A,C,B, high D, high C

Next we go to the descending skips.

Start with feet on high C and second space A.

The pattern:

C,A,B,G,A,F,G,E,F,D,E,C,D, low B, low C (both feet).
